Description

BUSH

2-3 m length bush with strong and erect stems, growing as a shrub. Stems with very dispersed thorns (point straight or slightly curved and wider towards the base), triangular and yellowish. Thorns interspersed by numerous straight, narrow spines. Young shoots with medium anthocyanin pigmentation.

LEAVES

12 × 9.5 cm leaves, with five 5 × 3.5 cm leaflets (sometimes three at the base of the inflorescence), thick, ovate, coriaceous, discoloured, with upper and lower surfaces glabrous. Leaves with straight or very low undulated margin. Leaves present few sessile glands on the rachis and anthocyanin pigmentation is absent.

STIPULES

2.5 × 0.2 cm stipules, long, narrow and concrescent with petiole and two pointed lobules. Divergent stipules, hairy and with pectin glands along the margin.

INFLORESCENCE

Inflorescence with one (sometimes few) strong fragrant flowers, with very fallen bracts, long pedicel covered by thorns and glands. Medium-large (4.90 × 5.06 cm), obcordate petals are purplish-red, generally with styles grouped into a column that doesn’t pass beyond the line of the stamens, and sometimes free. 6.70 mm in diameter stylar disc, with a 2.95 mm in diameter pore, little concave. Sepals are prolonged, triangular, with an apical lobule; dorsal and lobules are glandulous.

FRUIT

1.2 cm length and 1.1 cm width, subglobous or slightly urceolate fruit.
